Important: Introducing the Tourism Safety Victim Support Checklist

SATSA News

As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the safety and well-being of our visitors, we are proud to introduce a vital new resource for you and your staff: the Victim Support Checklist.

This easy-to-follow checklist has been meticulously designed to empower your teams to provide immediate, effective, and compassionate assistance to tourists in the unfortunate event of an incident. Whether you or your staff are on the scene of an incident or tourists are reporting an incident, this checklist will serve as a comprehensive guide to ensure that victims receive needed support with the professionalism and care that defines our industry.

Key Features of the Victim Support Checklist

1. Step-by-Step Guidance:
The checklist outlines clear, actionable steps for anyone to follow, ensuring that assistance is delivered efficiently and sensitively.

2. Flexible Application:
Understanding that incidents can vary widely in nature, the checklist is designed for flexibility. This means some steps may be skipped if not applicable, allowing you to adapt the response to the specific needs of the situation.

3. National Support Contact Details:
Included in the checklist is the Tourism Safety Hotline number. Through this centralised service, the National Response Group will kick into action, and you can access all the support you, your staff, and the tourists might need.

While we have endeavoured to make this checklist as thorough as possible, the dynamic nature of our environment means there could be room for enhancement. We encourage you to engage with this new tool actively.

Should you identify any additional steps or resources that could further enrich the checklist, please do not hesitate to share these insights with Hannelie@satsa.co.za for integration and updates.

Implementation and Training

To ensure that your staff are fully equipped and confident in utilising the Victim Support Checklist, we recommend incorporating this tool into your existing training programs. Familiarisation with the checklist should be a priority so that in the event of an incident, your team's response is swift, coordinated, calm and effective.

We hope to roll out general training on victim support in the near future and will share information as soon as we are able to.

Your Role

Your engagement and feedback are crucial to the success of this initiative. By integrating this checklist into your operations and sharing your experiences and suggestions, you contribute significantly to the safety and satisfaction of tourists across Southern Africa.

You are welcome to share this checklist far and wide. It is a tool that the entire industry is encouraged to use, regardless of membership.
