Gauteng Tourism Revenue Soars Over R30bn

Gauteng's MEC for Economic Development, Ms Tasneem Motara, recently shared the Province's statistics from September to December 2023 and discussed the impact of key events held in the province during that period. The session, held at Kyalami Shisanyama in Midrand, saw attendees from various tourism associations, travel partners, and media outlets.

MEC Motara highlighted Gauteng's tourism success, with R30 billion in foreign direct spending, surpassing the target of R13 billion. International arrivals reached 2,6 million, exceeding the target of 1,605 million, while domestic trips totalled over 5,6 million, indicating a strong recovery.

“Between September and December 2023, we have put to test our quality eventing infrastructure, mainstreamed SMMEs, and broader townships, informal settlements, and hostel-based enterprises and deliberately packaged our municipalities as part of a coherent global city region with comparative and competitive advantages housed in our regions,” said MEC Motara.

Motara emphasized the tangible benefits to women and youth, citing the revitalization of sectors previously impacted by COVID-19. The province's strategy prioritizes African markets, followed by the US, UK, Germany, China, India, the Middle East, and Brazil.

The strategy leverages initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to promote the "Growing Gauteng Together Vision 2030," enhancing inter-continental travel and hosting quality African global events.
