South Africa's De Hoop MPA Protects Endangered Sharks and Preserves African Penguins

Industry & Government News

South Africa's De Hoop Marine Protected Area (MPA) has proven effective in protecting endangered shark species, with 11 different species utilizing the MPA. The no-take marine reserve, managed by CapeNature, also plays a vital role in preserving the endangered African Penguin. The hope is that the colony will continue to grow with human-assisted access to fish.
