Sigma International embraces the circular economy
Reflecting on SATSA’s ‘Partnerships for Action’ Conference earlier this year, we are delighted to share a heartwarming story that truly exemplifies the spirit of collaboration, sustainability, and empowerment we experienced throughout the event.
As you know, one of our esteemed speakers at the conference was Akash Singh, CEO of Sigma International (implementer of the SATSA Tourism Business Incubator). In line with the conference’s theme – “From Talk to Walk” - the brand embraced the concept of a circular economy in the most tangible and creative way, thoughtfully crafting eco-friendly bags representing the travel and tourism industry’s essence as gifts for attendees.
Here comes the magical part: these unique bags were not just your regular conference souvenirs. They were lovingly handcrafted by a talented female entrepreneur, Danolene Johanessen from Bloom Africa Enterprises, one of Sigma's business incubators, using old linen sourced from hotels.
By upcycling these materials, the brand reduced waste and transformed them into meaningful keepsakes with a powerful message. But the impact didn’t stop there. The Sigma team encouraged attendees who wanted to ‘pay it forward’ to leave their bags behind after the conference, knowing the true potential of what those bags could achieve in the hands of others. And so, these bags embarked on a second journey of purpose. The bags found a new home in Mpophomeni, a charming rural town with a thriving tourism scene, where local children eagerly welcomed them with wide eyes and open hearts.
The gesture aimed to ignite passion and ambition in these young minds - possibly the next Bloom Africa Enterprises from Mpophomeni! Sigma’s belief in the power of education, opportunity, and mentorship stands as a beacon, guiding these children to envision their futures in the travel and tourism industry, while also nurturing circular economy principles. In Mpophomeni, Sigma champions this agenda via the Sigma International KZN Tourism Incubator.
By giving the bags to these young dreamers, we leave behind a legacy that extends far beyond the conference. We plant the seeds of possibility, reminding them that they too can contribute to a brighter, greener, and more responsible future for Southern Africa's tourism industry and themselves.
This heartwarming tale of collaboration and empowerment exemplifies the power of partnership and action. It reminds us that, as SATSA members, we are part of a community dedicated to making a difference, not just within our businesses but in the lives of those we touch through our work.
Let us carry forward this spirit of unity and purpose as we continue to work together for a sustainable and prosperous tourism industry in Southern Africa. Thank you for being part of this remarkable journey and your ongoing commitment to creating positive change.
