Member Feedback Request: Seal Interactions and Rabies Risk

Industry & Government News

Our partner, Western Cape DEDAT, has contacted us regarding a growing concern about tourist interactions with Cape Fur Seals, specifically the rising number of bite incidents and the confirmed presence of rabies within the seal population.

CapeNature has issued a public advisory discouraging any engagement with Cape Fur Seals.

You can read the full statement by CapeNature Advisory here.

In line with this, the Department of Health and Wellness has reiterated its position: “All human and animal contact with seals should be avoided as far as possible.”

We understand that some operators may still offer activities that bring guests into contact with seals. Before the Department issues a formal statement to the public, they are seeking input from industry to understand:

  • What precautionary measures are currently being implemented by operators?
  • How are tourists being informed of the risks, including rabies?
  • Are indemnity forms and safety briefings translated or accessible to non-English speakers?
  • Have you experienced or been made aware of any issues regarding the availability of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)?

We would appreciate you sharing your current approach to managing these concerns or flag any challenges you may have. The deadline is 30 April 2025.

This will help us provide a consolidated response to the Department and ensure that industry perspectives are considered.
