Mandarin Training Marks Positive Step for Tourist Guides

Industry & Government News

A recent Mandarin language training programme for South African tourist guides marks an encouraging step in strengthening the sector’s readiness for the Chinese market.

Supported by the Department of Tourism, the programme focused on developing practical language skills alongside a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and communication. This matters in a market where language, service and cultural nuance can play an important role in shaping the visitor experience.

As South Africa continues to rebuild and diversify demand across key international source markets, initiatives of this nature are an important reminder that tourism growth is not only about marketing destinations, but also about ensuring the industry is equipped to meet travellers with confidence, professionalism and care.

The latest training cohort completed five weeks of Mandarin instruction in Pretoria, forming part of the Department’s broader demand-led skills development efforts. These programmes continue to build valuable capability within the guiding community, while also supporting a more market-ready and competitive tourism sector over time.

We are proud to see a SATSA member among the graduates of this programme and congratulate Teshni Naidoo from Under African Skies on this meaningful achievement. Teshni has also participated in the recent KZN Tourism and Film Authority Growth Hub Programme.

Mandarin Training

Studying Mandarin was a real journey but finally crossing that finish line made every long day and late night feel completely worth it. Our cultural immersion experience in classes brought the language to life in a way that a textbook could never do, turning a tough challenge into a genuine and lasting memory.

Teshni's participation reflects the kind of ongoing investment in personal development and service excellence that strengthens the visitor experience and, ultimately, the industry as a whole.
