In this week’s newsletter we take a look at the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event, due to take place at the historic estate of Groot Constantia. It is an occasion that not only seeks the blessing for the new harvest but also serves as a powerful tribute, acknowledging those who have profoundly contributed to the South African wine industry's success.
Still on success, we also pay tribute to our national soccer team Bafana Bafana, who are participating in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) currently taking place in Cote d’Ivoire.
This past Sunday the team, won 4-0 over Namibia.
Events of this nature are not only great for entertainment but they are also great for our continent’s tourism and business events sector as we continue to showcase the African continent's ability to host major events incident-free.
We also honour South African mixed martial artist, Dricus Du Plessis, who recently made history by becoming the first South African to win a UFC championship. His achievement is a testament to the skill and determination of our homegrown talents on the global stage.
South African Tourism’s North America team was recently recognised as the Supplier Partner of the Year at the prestigious Association of Black Travel Professionals Summit. This accolade reflects our commitment to excellence and collaboration in the North American market.
South African Tourism’s North Europe team, in partnership with the greater South African tourism sector recently concluded a dynamic two-week showcase of South Africa’s variety of products and experiences, leaving an indelible mark in The Netherlands and Belgium. The South Africa team, comprised of various product owners and provincial tourism authority representatives, actively engaged with consumers and industry partners, showcasing the beauty and diverse offerings of South Africa.

Cheers to the 2024 Wine Harvest at the South African Wine Industry's Premier Event
Mark Your Calendar: On Thursday, 1 February 2024, the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event, widely regarded as the most prestigious wine event in the country, will once again grace the historic estate of Groot Constantia to mark the beginning of the South African wine industry. It is an occasion that not only seeks the blessing for the new harvest but also serves as a powerful tribute, acknowledging those who have profoundly contributed to the industry's success.
The 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership is a highly regarded accolade commemorating the year when wine was first produced from Cape grapes. This award highlights the accomplishments of those who have significantly impacted the wine industry. Last year, Ken Forrester, known worldwide as Mr Chenin, received this recognition. “Being nominated for the 1659 Award was incredibly special; the opportunity to join the hallowed ranks of all those before me – many of them already legends – was one of the biggest surprises in my life. This is a truly humbling experience to be recognised by one’s peers in an industry that thrives on passion and creativity,” stated Forrester.

Dr Esther Mahlangu Retrospective Tour
Iziko Museums of South Africa is pleased to announce “Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting”: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective, is opening on February 17, 2024. Curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, the exhibition highlights Dr Esther Mahlangu’s over 50-year long career and her meteoric rise as a contemporary artist, earning her global acclaim. The monumental retrospective will be open to the public at the Iziko South African National Gallery from February 18 until August 11, 2024. From there it will then begin its global tour, stopping first at Wits Art Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa, before moving to the United States in early 2026.
SA Tourism North America Hub honoured as Supplier of the Year at the Association of Black Travel Professionals Summit
The Association of Black Travel Professionals (ABTP) is focused on the development, growth and certification of Black Travel Professionals in order to raise the profile and talent base within the Black travel community.
SA Tourism North America participated in the recent ABTP Summit, delivering a robust destination training presentation for 80 members of trade, conducting 45 one on one networking appointments with travel advisors and attending professional development workshops.
During the Summit’s awards evening, SA Tourism’s North America Hub team was honoured as the “Supplier Partner of the Year” recognising the team’s support of ABTP members through education and training, on-going destination updates, familiarisation (FAM) trips, and the SA Specialist programme.
South Africa concludes a dynamic showcase in North Europe
South African Tourism’s North Europe Hub, in partnership with the greater South African tourism sector recently concluded a dynamic two-week showcase of the South Africa’s variety of products and experiences, leaving an indelible mark in The Netherlands and Belgium. The South Africa team comprised of various product owners and provincial tourism authority representatives, actively engaged with consumers and industry partners, showcasing the beauty and diverse offerings of South Africa.
The journey kicked off with a prominent presence at Vakantiebeurs, a leading trade and consumer show. Taking place at Jaarbeurs in Utrecht from the 10th to the 14th of January, the event provided an ideal platform for the South African exhibitors representing various products and experiences to exhibit the diverse and vibrant offerings of South Africa.
Following the success at Vakantiebeurs, South African Tourism’s North Europe Hub led a strong contingent of South African product owners including small business owners and extended its reach with an additional four days dedicated to a comprehensive roadshow. The roadshow spanned four cities across The Netherlands and Belgium, offering a unique opportunity for SA Tourism and South African product owners to engage in business-to-business interactions with Africa specialist tour operators and travel agents.
Congratulations Bafana Bafana: South Africa Triumphs over Namibia with a Resounding 4-0 Win
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is currently underway in the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) as 24 teams dream of being crowned champions of Africa.
In a dazzling display of skill and teamwork, the South African national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, secured a commanding victory over Namibia with an impressive 4-0 win in the group stage clash at the AFCON in Ivory Coast (Cote d’ Ivoire). From the kickoff, South Africa demonstrated their determination and prowess on the field, leaving no doubt about their commitment to success in the tournament. With this impressive start, South Africa's journey in the tournament looks promising. The players and fans alike will carry the momentum from this victory into the upcoming match against Tunisia on Wednesday 24th January.
Hosting a large scale sporting event such as the AFCON means an injection to the country’s economy and the tourism sector as sports enthusiasts follow their favourite team further boosting the hospitality, catering and entertainment industries.
Historic Triumph: Dricus Du Plessis Makes South African History as UFC Middleweight Champion
In a historic and exhilarating moment for South African sports, Dricus Du Plessis etched his name into the annals of mixed martial arts history by becoming the first South African UFC champion. The electrifying victory unfolded at UFC 298 in Canada, where Du Plessis faced off against the formidable Sean Strickland for the coveted title of undisputed middleweight champion.
From the opening bell, it was clear that fans were in for a spectacular showcase of skill and determination. Du Plessis, known for his explosive fighting style and unwavering resolve, left an indelible mark on the octagon with his precision strikes and strategic manoeuvres. The fight reached its climax when Du Plessis secured a decisive victory, claiming the middleweight championship belt and making history for South Africa.
