Explore South Africa's natural splendor: SA National Parks Week 2023

Industry & Government News

The 18th annual SA National Parks Week, hosted by the South African National Parks (SANParks), is set to take place from September 16th to 24th, 2023. In collaboration with esteemed partners Total South Africa and FNB, SANParks proudly presents this event, which will see an exciting extension of SA National Parks Week to include weekends in select national parks.

Since its inception in 2006, National Parks Week, themed 'Know Your National Parks', has attracted over 691,418-day visitors across all participating parks. Hapiloe Sello, Chief Executive Officer of SANParks, underscores the global significance of this initiative, stating, "The establishment of this week serves as part of a worldwide campaign to instill pride in South Africa's natural, cultural, and historical heritage, safeguarded by our national parks system. It harmoniously aligns with SANParks' visionary commitment to 'A Sustainable National Park System Connecting Society.'"

Throughout this week, complimentary access to most of the 21 national parks is granted to day visitors, with a particular emphasis on engaging local communities. It should be noted that this free access does not encompass accommodation facilities or additional tourist activities. Additionally, certain parks will extend the event to encompass the two weekends. The SA National Parks Week stands as a commendable campaign, effectively enhancing education and raising awareness about conservation matters. Sello emphasises the significance of South Africans embracing the national parks, stating, "The value of visiting and understanding our national parks cannot be overstated. They serve as realms for sustainable conservation practices, preserving and honouring our rich culture and heritage. Notably, national parks now play a pivotal role in empowering communities residing adjacent to these areas, generating employment opportunities. We persistently explore avenues for nurturing small businesses," remarks Sello.

The primary objective of this initiative is to offer the public insight into SANParks' role as the guardian of South Africa's natural heritage. To truly cultivate a sense of ownership and appreciation for the nation's natural legacy among all citizens, unrestricted access is paramount. This year, individuals are encouraged to explore a national park, free of charge, during SA National Parks Week. They can engage with the diverse offerings, acquaint themselves with their national parks, and immerse in the allure of iconic landscapes, abundant flora, and fauna. In conclusion, Sello encourages, "This is an opportunity not to be missed. Join in the celebration of South Africa's splendid natural heritage."

This annual event is a golden chance for all to immerse themselves in the beauty of South Africa's natural treasures, providing an enriching experience that should not be overlooked.
