Southern Cape Fire Disaster

Our thoughts and prayers are with all people affected in the devastating fires in the Knysna and surrounding areas. We are saddened by the loss suffered by our tourism colleagues and as SATSA we would like to assist in any way possible.

Via Knysna Tourism we can confirm at this stage that +/- 20 accommodation establishments in the area have been damaged/destroyed by fire and are now closed.

Stranded tourists are advised to contact or make their way to Pelican Lodge (044 343 3283, 082 9722 507) in Sedgefield where an Ops Centre has been set up. They will receive assistance from Ilze Jacobs, Safety and Security Officer of the Eden District Municipality.

SATSA’s partner, SATIB, has made available an emergency number through SATIB24: 1000 70230. This number is for medical emergencies and stranded tourists and will be coordinated by the Ops Centre at Pelican Lodge. Medical emergencies, passport/repatriation, missing people and trauma counselling can be provided.

Tourists needing accommodation over the next 72 hours can contact Nicole or Belinda at Sedgefield Tourism Offices on 044 343 2007. The four Chairmen of JAMMS (Joint Association Members Meeting Sessions made up of Cape Town Tourism, SAACI, FEDHASA and SATSA) have agreed that they will assist international tourists in need. Cape Town Visitor Centres will have all the key contact numbers on hand. FEDHASA Western Cape will, via its members in Cape Town, be in a position to assist with accommodation should it be required.

For urgent feedback and answers a Facebook page has been setup that can assist – Knysna Fires 7th June. Everyone is encouraged to use this.

To confirm whether properties have been affected please contact SATSA Western Cape, Colin Thaver on 082 410 0553 or SATSA National, Hannelie du Toit on 083 600 3555.
