SATSA recently hosted and trained individuals at our Johannesburg offices on the tour operating course presented by Lin Smith. Many of the participants have worked in various capacities within the tourism sector, be it guiding or in hospitality, and were looking for a way to upskill themselves.
SATSA spoke to the trainees who shared their experience.
Lelanie Caijiao previously worked as a guide for 8 years before entering the tour operating business. “Completing this course has helped me to close the gap between guiding and logistical management of a company. The course also taught me how to calculate costs, and commissions.” Josephine Ndara is already operating tours from her company in Namibia but still found the tour beneficial. “If I compare myself pre- and post-training I can see there’s a lot I didn’t know.”
Domonic Pillay found the course “very informative” and commended Lin on her presenting style, saying it was very open and encouraged communication and participation. Dave Nowikoa has recently decided to enter the tourism space. “Lin has a way of drawing you in with her humour. She has a wealth of knowledge and you come out of the course feeling confident with concrete ideas for business success.”
Participants also found the resources they were provided with a great deal of help. “The manual is comprehensive and I feel like we’ve been given a good foundation to go out, enter the market and succeed,” said Dominic. “I think the most important aspect I’ve learnt is the importance of networking – not only with guides but with everyone in the industry.”
Wyatt du Plessis has done more than his fair share of travel within South Africa and felt that it was time to start a business. “I don’t think you can start a tour operating business without this course. I still have a lot to learn but what’s great is knowing that SATSA and Lin are available even after the course,” he said.
Christoff Grobler was born in South Africa but has been living in Brazil for the last 7 years with his wife teaching English. He decided to plan a tour for his students for the year 2018 and felt that the course would help. “There is so much that goes into planning a trip. This course has helped me pinpoint exactly what I’d be good at offering the market and how to budget for the tour.”
The course enlightens participants on packaging, pricing, regulations, and some of the finer nuances of being a top tour operator.
